About this event

Icelandic pianist Víkingur Ólafsson is known for bringing fresh perspectives to the piano, while British composer Mark Simpson writes music full of energy and imagination. Together with Edward Gardner and the LPO, Ólafsson gives the first-ever performance of Simpson's new piano concerto – a chance to hear a brand-new work before anyone else.

That’s just the centrepiece of a concert that begins with Dorothy Howell’s sensuous tone-poem, and ends with Stravinsky’s magical The Firebird – a fairytale of love, darkness and dazzling light.

*Edward Gardner’s position with the LPO is generously supported by Aud Jebsen.

**Commissioned by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Bergen Philharmonic, Philharmonie Essen and Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
