PART OF BBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus 2018-19 Season BBC SO Shostakovich 2018/19
The vibrant colours and heady, perfumed atmosphere of ancient Chinese poems are captured in all their richness by Mahler's thickly-scored Das Lied von der Erde. Two star singers - tenor Stuart Skelton and mezzo Elisabeth Kulman, both regular BBC Symphony Orchestra collaborators - join as soloists. Music director Sakari Oramo will also conduct a pared-back BBCSO in Mozart's exhilarating Symphony No 35 'Haffner', it's bubbling, buffa style a contrast to the restless musical introspection of Thomas Larcher's Nocturne Insomnia - the second of three Larcher performances this season.
The BBC Symphony Orchestra has played a central role at the heart of British musical life since it was founded in 1930, and is passionately committed to performing 20th-century and contemporary music. The orchestra provides the backbone of the BBC Proms, and performs an annual season of concerts at the Barbican, all of which are broadcast on BBC Radio 3. Highlights in its 2014-15 Season include a complete Nielsen Symphony cycle under the baton of Chief Conductor Sakari Oramo, operas by Dalibor and Bartok, and three Total Immersion days.www.bbc.co.uk/orchestras/symphonyorchestra/
