Simon Trpceski
The prodigiously gifted Lahav Shani conducts three meticulously crafted masterworks from 20th-century composers.
Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini shapes Paganini's melody into a series of captivating variations. From the breakneck pace of the opening to the lyrical and serene variation 18, every twist and every take on the original theme showcases Rachmaninov's breath-taking ingenuity.
Drawing upon fragments of Russian folk song, Stravinsky's Petrushka tells a story of love, jealousy and revenge, with three warring puppets at the centre of the tale. Crushing and tragic, the piece heightens ancient melodies with elegance, nobility and a terrible power.
