About this event
The Manchester Collective, soprano Héloïse Werner and mezzo-sopranos Fleur Barron and Katie Bray come together to perform the beguiling Spell Book by British-American composer Freya Waley-Cohen.
Freya Waley-Cohen’s ‘intimate and visionary’ music contrasts earthy playfulness and ethereal delicacy, qualities that characterise both sets of her Spell Book. The first was premiered by Katie Bray, and the second was co-commissioned by Héloïse Werner. In collaboration with Fleur Barron and the Manchester Collective, these artists invite listeners into Waley-Cohen’s mesmeric world.
Known for its adventurous performances, the Manchester Collective won this year’s Royal Philharmonic Ensemble award. Fleur Barron is ‘a knockout performer’ (The Times); Katie Bray ‘combines the heightened thrills of the soprano with the soulful pungency of the lower tessitura’ (VoxCarnyx); while Héloïse Werner’s ‘sense of fun gives even the most daring pieces a light and engaging touch’ (The Sunday Times).
