About this event

The Music

Brahms’ Sonata No 1 for Viola is a late piece, originally composed for clarinet, but transcribed shortly after for the viola. The instrument’s mellow sound is perfect for this graceful, autumnal work, journeying from a solemn opening to a boisterously good-natured finale.

Another late – in fact, last – work is Shostakovich’s Viola Sonata, completed a few weeks before the composer’s death in 1975. The viola and piano explore some dark territory together, as well as reflecting on the past. The finale is both a tribute to Beethoven and a musical summary of Shostakovich’s own 15 symphonies. It ends with poignant simplicity.

The Performers

Antoine Tamestit is one of the most sought-after solo violists of his generation, his vibrant versatility perfect for the two contrasting works in this programme. He is joined by the renowned pianist Bertrand Chamayou.
