Alexander Malofeev plays Prokofiev, and Hannu Lintu conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra in colourful showpieces by Adams and Stravinsky – plus a Bernard Rands world premiere.
It's all about colour, as three master-entertainers put on a show. The young Prokofiev dazzles the crowds in jazz-age Europe; Stravinsky’s nightingale spins a fabulous song and John Adams makes supercharged mischief with the most basic elements of western music. First, though, a major new statement from a living master: the world premiere of Bernard Rands’s Symphonic Fantasy.
Coming from an artist of Rands’s stature, that’d be enough in itself to make this concert a special occasion: a powerful tribute to Sibelius from a composer with a voice that’s entirely his own. That calls for sonic fireworks: and with the phenomenal Alexander Malofeev at the piano, and conductor Hannu Lintu making a very welcome return, Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto should light up the sky.
