‘The truth untold, the pity of war, the pity war distilled …’ After Europe was devastated by war, Benjamin Britten composed his War Requiem, combining religious texts with the powerful anti-war poetry of Wilfred Owen. The result is one of the most moving musical responses to war ever written, exploring grief, loss and the hope of reconciliation. Tonight, the LPO opens a season exploring the purpose that music can bring to our lives. Conductor Edward Gardner leads the London Philharmonic Choir and an outstanding cast of soloists in this unforgettable 20th-century masterpiece – music that still feels as powerful and relevant today as when it was first performed.
