About this event

In the final years of Stalin’s Russia, composers could not speak openly about fear or oppression. Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 10 reflects this time, using music to express tension and resistance in a way that is not immediately obvious. Under Chief Conductor & Artistic Advisor Designate Paavo Järvi, this performance brings out the power in every detail of the score. 

The programme also includes Beethoven’s mightiest piano concerto, played by one of Britain’s best-loved pianists. And there’s a chance to discover the powerful Overture No. 2, written during the Cold War by Järvi’s fellow Estonian Veljo Tormis.
