About this event
When Tchaikovsky visited Florence, he fell in love with the place, its art and its music. His Souvenir de Florence preserves some of the wonder he felt there.
When Schoenberg read ‘Verklärte Nacht’ by the poet Richard Dehmel, he was moved to turn it into a wordless tone-poem, fuelled by his own new-found passion for the woman who later became his wife.
Both composers, writing in a flood of inspiration, chose the luscious sounds of a string sextet for their purposes, creating works that made the most of the ensemble’s capacity for rich harmonies and lavish expression.
Benedetti leads a group of soloists from the Philharmonia Orchestra in a celebration of this irresistible medium.
‘There was an enjoyable balance, too, between the [Philharmonia Chamber] players’ individual musical personalities … so much so that you’d be convinced that this was a long-established chamber group’
