John Luther Adams Become Ocean
Described by The New Yorker’s Alex Ross as what ‘may be the loveliest apocalypse in musical history’, John Luther Adams’s Become Ocean is a vast, luminous expanse of music with a troubling but hopeful message about our relationship with nature.
For BBC SO Principal Guest Conductor Dalia Stasevska, it’s a story that simply has to be told.
ARCHORA, by leading Icelandic composer Anna Thorvaldsdottir – a master of organically shifting orchestral textures – is also born of nature, suggesting both a primordial, fundamental energy source and an ‘omnipresent parallel realm’.
In György Ligeti’s Atmosphères, the sound-clouds shift almost imperceptibly, creating a glowing stillness that film director Stanley Kubrick matched to the Star Gate sequence in his 1968 sci-fi movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.
This immersive, meditative concert will run for approximately 80 minutes without an interval.
