The songs of Spain don’t always sound the way you expect. Yes, there’s passion, and the special strain of emotion that emerges from a landscape and culture unique in Europe. But there’s also delicacy, joy and dazzling sophistication: as a generation of Spanish composers – de Falla, Granados and Turina – took their cues from the music of France, and emerged sounding more Spanish than ever.
The Performers
For Clara Mouriz, bringing the lesser-known jewels of Spanish song to a wider audience is a personal mission – one that’s she’s accomplished with unsurpassed sensitivity and flair since she was selected as a BBC New Generation Artist, over a decade ago. Together with regular recital-partner Joseph Middleton, this Spanish-born mezzo-soprano has emerged as one of the foremost living champions of this ravishing but elusive repertoire.
