Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Symphony No 5
‘With desire and passion’ wrote Tchaikovsky over the notes of his Fifth Symphony, and he’s as good as his word: this is a symphony that positively blazes with melody, excitement and heartfelt, uncompromising emotion. But all music tells a story, whether it’s Nokuthula Ngwenyama’s message of intergalactic compassion, or a trumpet concerto that practically laughs out loud for sheer joy.
Taking the spotlight in Hummel’s effervescent trumpet concerto is the LSO’s very own Principal Trumpet James Fountain, who’s been playing since he was three years old and describes his job as ‘a dream come true’.
Change of conductor
Unfortunately Xian Zhang has contracted Covid, and has had to withdrawn from this performance. The LSO is very grateful to Ryan Wigglesworth for agreeing to step in to conduct the concert. The programme remains unchanged.
