About this event

Having celebrated its 50th anniversary last season, the Brodsky Quartet is at the forefront of chamber music performance in Britain today.

First formed in Yorkshire in 1972, the group has enjoyed a consistent rise and rise, with two of its original members still in place and with repertoire ranging across quartet music from the past two centuries and more.

The concert begins with an arrangement by their violist, Paul Cassidy, of Bach’s intricate, multi-voiced Sonata in G minor, originally written for solo violin.

They continue with Benjamin Britten’s String Quartet No.3, the British composer’s last major work: he bids farewell to his life in music with a composition that remains fresh and captivating to the last.

The programme is completed by Schubert’s Death and the Maiden quartet, a work of visionary, dark and driven romanticism, with a central movement based on the composer’s song of the same title.
