About this event
The multiple award-winning percussionist Colin Currie has been described by composer Steve Reich as ‘one of the greatest musicians in the world today’.
He formed the Colin Currie Group in 2006 to perform Reich’s music, and in today’s concert they present two of his seminal percussion works, Music for Pieces of Wood and Drumming Part 1.
Alongside, the ensemble offers music from Reich’s successors, all of whom have written for Currie in the past. There’s a work for four drumkits by the leading Bang on a Can musician Julia Wolfe, a tribute to Reich by the Norwegian trumpeter and avant-garde performance artist Rolf Wallin.
A UK premiere from major British composer Mark-Anthony Turnage includes a solemn ‘Bells for Ukraine’ movement alongside groove-based and funk-inspired sections.
Join us to explore dazzling contemporary works that make percussion instruments speak as never before.
