Wonder, passion and pure delight, as pianist Kirill Gerstein brings both heart and mind to bear on the music of Chopin, Schumann, Poulenc and Liszt.
In the romantic era, the piano grew wings. Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt bring the house down with glittering cascades of sound; Robert Schumann creates a carnival in his own imagination, and does things with the piano that ought to be impossible. A century later, Francis Poulenc looked back with a satirical eye and an irrepressible sense of delight.
Pure pleasure, in other words, and this solo recital is a glorious way for pianist Kirill Gerstein to celebrate the conclusion of his Spotlight Artist series with the LSO. ‘Exquisite technique, refined musicianship and engrossing imagination’ was how The New York Times described Gerstein’s very personal way with Romantic music – but in his own words, ‘Each performance is a very special mix of the performer and the music’ and this one should be very special indeed.
