Visionary pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard joins the Philharmonia in a programme spanning the Romantic period.

In his decades-long career, Pierre-Laurent Aimard has earned a reputation as one of the most respected interpreters of Beethoven’s music. Tonight, he treats us to a performance of the Third Piano Concerto.
Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 was inspired by the spirituals and folk music Dvořák heard while he was working in New York in the 1890s. The lullaby-like cor anglais melody of its slow movement is just one of many memorable moments in this mainstay of the orchestral repertoire.
Weber’s 1821 opera Der Freischütz (The Marksman) ticks all the boxes required to become an international mega-hit in the early Romantic era – a deep dark forest, a pact with the devil, seven magic bullets, and the redemptive love of a good woman. Its overture is a chance to sample the atmosphere and drama of Weber’s masterpiece.
