About this event

Among today’s most profoundly admired pianists, Uchida has been showered with accolades over the years, her recordings winning multiple Grammys and Gramophone Awards.

She has long been associated with the music of Vienna, especially Beethoven and Schubert. Today she explores some of their greatest late works for piano.

Her programme centres on the darkness-and-light contrasts of Beethoven’s two-movement Sonata in E minor Op.90.

It culminates in Schubert’s achingly valedictory final sonata, the B flat major D.960, a haunting work filled with songlike melody and poised on the cusp between sorrow and joy.
