Schumann Symphony No.4
‘A wondrous tone, an elegant straightforwardness and a freshness of utterance’ – that was how one critic described the playing of Johan Dalene, when he won the Nielsen International Violin Competition in 2019. We’re always delighted to welcome this young Swedish-Norwegian violinist back to London. This time, he’s playing one of the warmest and best-loved of all violin concertos; the big, songful centrepiece of a concert charged with Romanticism with a capital R. There’s a tempestuous overture from the neglected French genius Louise Farrenc. And then Alpesh Chauhan – a young British conductor with a flair for grand passions – dives into a symphony that’s both the stormiest, and the most tender, that Schumann ever wrote.
